The Howard University Bison are making history, again.

This week the Howard University Men’s Basketball team traveled to participate in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) March Madness tournament.

This is the first time the team has played in the tournament in 21 years, with their last appearance being in 1992.

As the Bison geared up for Iowa, to face the Kansas University Jayhawk’s, alumni and students cheered them on.

Many notable alumni and sports professionals made videos on social media this week, congratulating the team on their win. The team was even mentioned on a couple different news outlets, as alumni made sure to shout out their alma mater on-air.

“I’m thrilled and excited, looking forward to this big game against Kansas,” said Wolf Blitzer, anchor of CNN’s The Situation Room. “I’m hoping we go all the way.”

Even though it was an away game, that didn’t stop the student body from supporting their fellow Bison. The Undergraduate Student Assembly (UGSA) held a watch party for students in the ballroom of Blackburn auditorium. Refreshments were provided, as everyone cheered on their peers playing on the big screen.

More social media videos of students sending their love were posted to the teams official Instagram.

“Congrats to y’all this is a big accomplishment,” said Howard University student Obiloh Egu, in a video posted on the team’s account. “We’re all proud of y’all and are standing behind y’all. Go do your thing.”

Howard University lost to Kansas University 68-96. Vice President Kamala Harris visited the locker room after the game to ensure the team that they made their university proud.

“You played hard, you played to the very last second. You made all us Bison so, so proud,” said Harris “You keep playing with chin up and shoulders back because you showed the world who Bison are.”
